Understanding Fleet Pings

In deep null-sec, operational awareness is the difference between victory and an expensive wipe. Fleet pings are broadcast via Discord to notify the corporation of incoming operations, enemy movements, or strategic objectives.

All members are expected to understand how to read these broadcasts and respond efficiently.

1. Fleet Priorities & Types

Not all pings carry the same weight. Pay close attention to the prefixes used in broadcasts:

  • ** STRATOP / CTA (Call to Arms):** High-priority fleets that directly affect our sovereignty, infrastructure, or coalition standing. Unless you have a valid real-life emergency, you are expected to drop what you are doing, dock up, and join.
  • ** HOME DEFENSE:** Broadcast when hostile fleets enter our immediate home systems or threaten local infrastructure. Protecting our staging, industrial assets, and coalition space is a core responsibility.
  • ** FUN FLEET / ROAM:** Casual fleets meant for practice, content generation, or blowing off steam. Participation is highly encouraged but completely voluntary.

** The Golden Rule of Time:** Fleet pings are always broadcast in EVE Time (UTC). Never use your local time zone when discussing formup targets with the corporation.

2. Anatomy of a Fleet Ping

A standard operational broadcast contains four critical pieces of information that tell you exactly what you need to do:

  • FC (Fleet Commander): The pilot in charge of the operation.
  • Doctrine: The specific ship composition being fielded. (Check the fitings page to ensure your ship exactly matches the official fit).
  • Formup Location: Where the fleet is gathering. Usually the main staging Keepstar or Fortizar.
  • Comms: Which Mumble server and voice channel to join. (See Comms & Services Setup).

Example Broadcast Breakdown

Here is what a typical coalition stratop ping looks like on Discord:

** STRATOP - PHOENIX COALITION ** FC: Emerald Volpe Time: 19:30 EVE Time (Forming NOW) Location: Staging Keepstar Doctrine: Cerberus (HACs) / Scimitars (Logi) Comms: Phoenix Mumble -> Fleet 1 Notes: This is an offensive timer for an enemy Fortizar. Max numbers required. Bring interceptors for the travel fleet if you aren't staged.

3. What to Do When a Ping Goes Out

When a strategic or home defense ping is broadcast, follow these steps immediately:

  1. Stop Ratting/Mining: Safely dock up or warp to a secure structure bookmark immediately. Do not risk getting caught out alone while a fleet is forming.
  2. Check Your Assets: Check your hangar at the formup location for the required doctrine ship. If you do not have it, immediately check the local market for a ship.
  3. Get on Comms: Open Mumble and get into the designated channel before the fleet leaves the dock. Keep chatter to a minimum while the FC is organizing.

Ping Etiquette

  • Read the Broadcast: Do not reply to pings with questions that are already explicitly answered in the text. Asking "What doctrine?" or "Where do we go?" when it is written in the broadcast clutters communication channels.
  • No Backseating: The FC team coordinates these operations hours or days in advance based on strategic targets, intel, and logistics—not personal convenience. Do not complain about the choice of doctrine or timing.
  • Comms Discipline: Keep the local system chat clean. When traveling or fighting, do not smack-talk the enemy in local. Your behavior reflects on the entire corporation ticker.
